The Roads Are Wide Open.

There’s an old joke that Wyoming only has two seasons: winter and road construction. But if you’re from the northern U.S., you’ve probably heard that about your home state. There’s nothing unique about road work; it happens everywhere and is just a fact of life. Still, getting stuck behind a pilot car isn’t fun.

Road construction will resume on parts of US Hwy 385 in the central Black Hills of South Dakota this summer. This popular route connects the central and northern Hills. Travelers there can expect pilot car lines, wait times, loose gravel road surfaces, and narrow lanes. Yuck! That’s the bad news.

The good news is that Weston County in Wyoming offers a great alternative route. Enjoy access to all the outdoor adventure and scenic beauty from the quietest corner of the Black Hills. When you make Weston County the base camp of your Black Hills vacation, you stay away from US Hwy 385’s road construction. And away from the busy crowds and tourist traffic.

Weston County rests on the western edge of the Black Hills National Forest. Mount Rushmore is usually a short drive, a little over an hour. Crazy Horse, even less. Popular Hill’s destinations like Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon, Sturgis, you name it — you can get there from Weston County.

Don’t let highway work keep you from a relaxing Black Hills getaway this summer. Plan your stay in Weston County – where the roads are wide open.
