Enjoy deep powder and epic winter rides in Weston County

Weston County boasts some of the best snowmobiling in the country. Sledding season is nearly here. So, get your permits, start watching the snow reports, hope the weather cooperates, and plan your epic getaway.

The snowmobiling season in the Black Hills is December 15th through March 31st. Wyoming’s season runs from December 1st to April 15th.

The Black Hills Snowmobile Trail System is massive. In the 1.2 million-acre National Forest, there are 416 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Weston County’s access point for the Black Hills System runs 40 miles of groomed trail through northeast Wyoming before linking to the 295 miles of trail in South Dakota.

The Buckhorn Snowmobile Trailhead is the closest trailhead for riders from Newcastle, Wyoming, via US Highway 85 North for 23.3 miles. The trailhead is on the south side of US 85. The trailhead is privately owned, so please be respectful by remaining on roads, parking lots, and trails.

A bit further north, the Bear Lodge Mountains offer 78 miles of groomed trails. Here, sledders loop through small hills and valleys, climbing 5,000 to 7,000 feet.

Snowmobiling in Weston County can be epic! When conditions are right, you can expect plenty of deep powder in the mountain forests and meadows. Ready to go? We can’t blame you. But please do your homework first. For more information about snowmobiling in the Black Hills, including trail conditions, maps, fees/licenses, safety, rules and regulations, visit:
